Modernisations and service changes
We are increasingly focussing on large-scale renovations
Why? Because we achieve more with one large construction site than with several smaller measures. Public transport passengers get noticeable improvements, while neighbours only have to deal with one construction site.
Why not just do it at night?
We carry out most track construction work during non-operational times (i.e. at night), during the holidays or even during ongoing operations. In this way, we avoid restrictions for passengers, but can only achieve selective improvements. In contrast, large-scale construction sites, which we realise together with other departments of the City of Vienna, are much more effective. A major construction site may cause short-term restrictions, but in return an entire section of road is made fit for the coming decades.
These projects will start in January and February 2025:
🚧 U4: Demolition and new construction of the underground Alserbach bridge (part 2)
We are continuing with the new construction of the underground Alserbach Bridge and are renewing the supporting structure under track 2. Despite the construction work, the U4 is running continuously to Heiligenstadt.
Restriction from 13 January up to and including 26 February 2025:
Track 2 is closed during the construction work. At Friedensbrücke station, the U4 will run on track 1 in both directions (alternating track operation).
Every second train runs beyond Schwedenplatz to Heiligenstadt. This leads to a slightly longer interval in this section.
🚧 U1 Kagran: Modernisation of the platform in the direction of Oberlaa
We are continuing the modernisation of the foundations and surface at Kagran station - this time on the platform in the direction of Oberlaa.
Restriction from 10 February to the end of June 2025:
No stop in Kagran in the Oberlaa direction of travel. The U1 only stops in Kagran in the direction of Leopoldau.
Alternative:
Take the U1 in the direction of Oberlaa to Alte Donau station, change there to a train travelling in the opposite direction and travel back to Kagran. Please allow an extra ten minutes for this journey.
🚧 Franz-Jonas-Platz and Schloßhofer Straße (1210 Vienna): Modernization of the tracks
We are modernising the track infrastructure in Floridsdorf from February to June. In order to minimise restrictions for public transport services, we are carrying out the main work during the night.
Restrictions from 4 February up to and including 18 June 2025:
Earlier closing time (approx. 00:00 midnight) for lines 25, 26 and 31
🚧 U6: Installation of new switches between Spittelau and Jägerstraße
During the semester break, we are replacing the points on the U6 between Spittelau and Jägerstraße.
Restriction from 3 February up to and including 9 February 2025:
The U6 is divided. It will run between Siebenhirten and Spittelau and between Floridsdorf and Jägerstraße. Alternatively, lines 33 and 37A are available.
🚧 11A and 11B: Restrictions due to construction of line 12
Due to track construction work and roadworks for the new tram line 12, bus routes 11A and 11B have to be diverted or shortened.
- Diversion of line 11A: 10 January 2025 until probably the beginning of March 2025
- Short route for line 11B: 10 January until probably May 2025
Further information and the exact diversion route can be found in the map.
Tram Modernization Highlights 2025
🚧 Hütteldorfer Straße
We are replacing around 1,750 metres of track on Hütteldorfer Straße. Lines 46 and 52 will partially take over the route from line 49 during the work.
🚧 Landstraßer Hauptstraße, Schlachthausgasse
Line 18 will have 2,430 meters of new tracks on Landstraßer Hauptstraße and Schlachthausgasse. Due to the extensive work, there will be diversions and line closures.
🚧 Franz Jonas Platz, Schloßhofer Straße
In the 21st district, 1,780 meters of tracks will be replaced in the Franz-Jonas-Platz area and on Schloßhofer Straße. Due to the ÖBB's work on the S-Bahn main line, the work by Wiener Linien must largely be carried out during non-operational times.
🚧 Jörgerstraße
Jörgerstraße will receive almost 1,000 meters of new tracks to ensure smooth operation of line 43. From Elterleinplatz, the 43 will be diverted towards Gersthof and the 9 will be shortened to Rosensteingasse. The intervals of lines 2 and 44 will be shortened.
🚧 Ringstraße
In the city center, parts of the heavily used tracks on the ring also have to be replaced. New tracks and switches are being installed on the Kärntner Ring, Universitätsring and Schubertring. Some of the ring lines have to be diverted. The U1, U2, U3 and U4 subway lines are available as alternatives.
Subway: Modernization Highlights 2025
🚧 U1: Platform renovation Kagran and new switches at Keplerplatz
In Kagran, modernization work on the foundation and surface of the platform is entering its second round. This time it is the turn of the platform in the direction of Oberlaa. As in the previous year, trains will travel through the station on this side from March to July without stopping.
The U1 will also get new switches at Keplerplatz at Easter.
🚧 U4: New tunnel supports and bridge structure
U4: New construction of the underground bridge over the Alserbach
The second part of the construction of the underground bridge will start in January and will last until the end of May. As in the previous year, the U4 will still be able to maintain operations from Hütteldorf to Heiligenstadt. There will be a restriction from January 13th to the end of February: Since only every second train can travel to Heiligenstadt, there will be a slightly longer train interval between Schwedenplatz and Heiligenstadt.
U4: Tunnel supports between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke
In the summer of 2024, Wiener Linien renovated the tunnel supports of the U4 between Schwedenplatz and Schottenring. In 2025, the section between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke will be renovated. During the work, the U4 cannot run in this area.
🚧 U6: New switches, modern Tscherttegasse station
During the semester break and the autumn break, the U6 will receive new switches between Spittelau and Jägerstraße. During this period, line 33 will also run on weekends and in the evenings between Josefstädter Straße and Jägerstraße.
Starting in spring, the Tscherttegasse station will be modernized and accessibility will be significantly improved. During the work, trains will travel through one direction of the U6 station at a time.
🚧 Renovations of escalators and elevators
In 2025, the Vienna subway network will get 12 new elevators and 12 modern escalators. This year, special attention is again being paid to the U6. Gumpendorfer Straße will be the first to be renovated in January. An elevator at Stephansplatz will also be renovated at the beginning of the year.
In 2025, Wiener Linien will invest a total of 6.3 million euros in the renewal of elevators and escalators.
