Tram tracks and a caterpillar at a construction site

Hütteldorfer Straße: We are renewing tracks and improving stops

The renewal of the tram tracks in Hütteldorfer Straße is one of our biggest track construction projects this year. We are eliminating slow sections and improving comfort at the Johnstraße and Breitensee stops. Line 49 will not be able to run during the construction work, but most of the route will be taken over by tram lines 46 and 52. Together with alternative transport options, the 14th district will thus remain well connected to the public transport network.

Travel faster, get on and off more comfortably

Line 49 runs at very frequent intervals, which means that the tracks are exposed to heavy loads. They have reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced. In 2025, we will be replacing a total of 1,750 metres of track on Hütteldorfer Straße over the course of the year, eliminating slow sections so that you can travel quickly again.

We are also redesigning the Johnstraße and Breitensee stops and making them more convenient for passengers. Passengers will be able to change to other lines more easily and conveniently in future.

Line 49 cannot run during the construction work, but most of the route will be taken over by tram lines 46 and 52, which will be extended for this purpose. Together with alternative transport options, the 14th district will thus remain well connected to the public transport network during the construction work.

Advantages of the modernisation:

Phase 1

By renewing the tracks, we are making the infrastructure in this area fit for the coming decades. We are also eliminating slow sections. As a result, our passengers will be able to travel quickly again and punctuality and reliability will increase.

The Johnstraße stop will be more comfortable for passengers:

  • The waiting area will be widened to 3.50 metres.
  • The stop will have an additional bench and will be landscaped.
  • Thanks to the track spacing, both the trams on line 49 and the buses on line 12A can use the stop simultaneously and in both directions. This makes it easier for passengers to change between bus and tram.

Phase 2

The Breitensee stop will be more convenient for passengers:

  • The stop in the direction of travel Ring, Volkstheater will be connected to the park. This will be more convenient for waiting passengers due to its proximity to the park, and passengers will not have to cross the road to get on or off the tram.
  • The stop in the direction of Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse will also be located on the side. This means that passengers do not have to cross the road to get on or off the tram.

The Breitensee reversing loop, which is used for short journeys and for alighting, will have a new on-demand stop. This will make boarding and alighting more convenient for passengers.

The MA28 is building a new two-way cycle path.

Phase 1: Johnstraße track construction site: 24 February to mid-April 2025

Track closure between Urban Loritz Platz and Hütteldorfer Straße U

From 24 February to mid-April, we will be replacing the tracks of line 49 on Hütteldorfer Straße at the junction with Johnstraße. Line 49 will therefore not be able to run, but tram lines 46 and 52 will be extended and take over most of the route of line 49.

This will get you to your destination during the track construction work:

Line U3: The U3 covers the 49 line Hütteldorfer Straße - Johnstraße - Schweglerstraße. From here you can take the U3 to Westbahnhof, from there you can take lines 52 (extended), 6, 18 and U6 to Urban Loritz Platz.

Line 46 extended to Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse: Tram line 46 is extended beyond its regular terminus at Joachimsthalerplatz and runs from there to the Hütteldorfer Straße U stop and continues on the route of line 49 to Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse.

Line 52 extended to Ring, Volkstheater: Tram line 52 is extended beyond its regular terminus at Westbahnhof and runs from there to Urban Loritz Platz and continues on the route of line 49 to Ring, Volkstheater.
