Hütteldorfer Straße: We are renewing tracks and improving stops
Travel faster, get on and off more comfortably
Line 49 runs at very frequent intervals, which means that the tracks are exposed to heavy loads. They have reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced. In 2025, we will be replacing a total of 1,750 metres of track on Hütteldorfer Straße over the course of the year, eliminating slow sections so that you can travel quickly again.
We are also redesigning the Johnstraße and Breitensee stops and making them more convenient for passengers. Passengers will be able to change to other lines more easily and conveniently in future.
Line 49 cannot run during the construction work, but most of the route will be taken over by tram lines 46 and 52, which will be extended for this purpose. Together with alternative transport options, the 14th district will thus remain well connected to the public transport network during the construction work.
7 April to June 2025 (phase 2): Breitensee track construction site

Breitensee track construction site: track closure and alternative routes
Tracks closed between Urban Loritz Platz and Baumgarten - line 49 cancelled, 12A short service
From 7 April to June, we will be replacing the tram tracks on Hütteldorfer Straße between Matzingerstraße and Leyserstraße and improving the Breitensee stop. Line 49 can therefore not run, it is cancelled. Line 12A runs on a short route until the end of April. Line 52 is extended in both directions and takes over the 49 sections between Baumgarten and Hütteldorfer Straße as well as Urban Loritz Platz and Ring, Volkstheater.
Alternatives during the track construction work:
- U3 line: The U3 covers the 49 route Hütteldorfer Straße - Johnstraße - Schweglerstraße. From here you can take the U3 to Westbahnhof, from there you can take lines 52 (extended), 6, 18 and U6 to Urban Loritz Platz.
- Line 52: Tram line 52 runs parallel to line 49 and is extended beyond its regular terminus at Westbahnhof and Baumgarten. It runs into the city from Westbahnhof to Urban Loritz Platz and continues on the route of line 49 to Ring, Volkstheater. Out of town, it runs from Baumgarten to Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse.
- Shuttle service for people with reduced mobility: A shuttle service runs between Hütteldorfer Straße U and Lützowgasse. You can order a journey by dialling +43 664 623 66 11 (at least 15 minutes before departure) between 07:00 and 19:00.
- The replacement bus 49E runs on a circular route between Seckendorfstraße, Lützowgasse and Linzer Straße, taking passengers to route 52.
- Lines 47A, 51A and the S45 connect Hütteldorfer Straße to the public transport network.
The modernisation will bring these benefits:

Stops will be more comfortable, trams will run faster
Phase 1 (Johnstraße):
❤️ By renewing the tracks, we are making the infrastructure in this area fit for the coming decades. We are also eliminating slow sections. As a result, our passengers will be able to travel quickly again and punctuality and reliability will increase.
❤️ The Johnstraße stop will be more comfortable for passengers:
👉🏼 The waiting area will be widened to 3.50 metres.
👉🏼 The stop will have an additional bench and will be landscaped.
👉🏼 Thanks to the track spacing, both the trams on line 49 and the buses on line 12A can use the stop simultaneously and in both directions. This makes it easier for passengers to change between bus and tram.
Phase 2 (Breitensee):
❤️ The Breitensee stop will be more convenient for passengers:
👉🏼 The stop in the direction of travel Ring, Volkstheater will be connected to the park. This will be more convenient for waiting passengers due to its proximity to the park, and passengers will not have to cross the road to get on or off the tram.
👉🏼 The stop in the direction of Hütteldorf, Bujattigasse will also be located on the side. This means that passengers do not have to cross the road to get on or off the tram.
❤️ The Breitensee reversing loop, which is used for short journeys and for alighting, will have a new on-demand stop. This will make boarding and alighting more convenient for passengers.
❤️ A cycle connection between Hütteldorfer Straße and Meiselstraße (construction period: March to September 2025): Another section of the cycle path project via Hütteldorfer Straße and Meiselstraße to the west of Vienna will be completed this year as part of the new track construction. In 2024, a wide two-way cycle path was created from the Gürtel to Johnstraße. In 2025, the neighbouring Meiselstraße will now become a cycle route as far as Breitensee S-Bahn station. From there out of town to Leyserstraße, Hütteldorfer Straße will have a two-way cycle path. In a third section, the cycle route will be extended even further westwards. This will create a climate-friendly 4-kilometre cycle route through the 15th and 14th districts.
