Restrictions caused by the construction of tram lines 12 and 27:

Since February, Wiener Linien has been constructing the 120 metre long and 14.5 metre wide bridge support structure at Aspern Nord, on which the new line 27 will run over the U2 underground line and the S-Bahn in future. We will then build the tracks in the HausfeldstraĂźe (from mid-February 2024), Pirquetgasse/Berresgasse (from March 2024) and Hirschstettner Hauptallee (from autumn 2024) areas. Completion is planned for autumn 2025.

In August, Wiener Linien is installing switches for the new tram line 12 on line O. The section of line O between Praterstern and Bruno Marek Allee is therefore closed.

Restriction: Line O shortened to Praterstern

Line O is short-routed, it only runs between RaxstraĂźe-RudolfshĂĽgelgasse and Praterstern.

Duration of the restriction:

5 August up to and including 1 September 2024

In August, Wiener Linien is installing switches for the new tram line 27 on line 26. Line 26 will therefore be diverted for two weeks.

Restriction: Line 26 diverted, replacement bus 26E between Kagraner Platz and HausfeldstraĂźe

The route of line 26 is closed between Josef Baumann Gasse and HausfeldstraĂźe. Line 26 will therefore be diverted from Josef Baumann Gasse to Kagran. The replacement bus 26E is running between Kagraner Platz and HausfeldstraĂźe. The replacement bus is easily accessible with the U1.

Duration of the restriction:

5 up to and including 18 August 2024

In July, Wiener Linien is installing switches on the route of Line 2 in preparation for the new tram line 12.

Restrictions: Line 2 diverted

Line 2 cannot run between Am Tabor and Hochstädtplatz during the work. It will be diverted via the route of lines 5 and 31.

Duration of the restriction:

1 to 19 July 2024 inclusive

In preparation for the new tram line 12, pipes are being relocated at the VorgartenstraĂźe/LassallestraĂźe and VorgartenstraĂźe/Ennsgasse junctions from 2 April to the end of August 2024. There will be local changes to bus routes 11A and 11B for the duration of the construction work:

  • Bus route 11A in the direction of Stadion U will be routed via Handelskai from the VorgartenstraĂźe underground station to the Elderschplatz stop. An alternative stop will be set up in the Handelskai 210/WachaustraĂźe area.
  • Bus route 11B will only run between Friedrich-Engels-Platz and the VorgartenstraĂźe U1 underground station.

100 construction sites, only a quarter have an impact on operations

Wiener Linien will be using hammers, drills and excavator shovels at a total of 100 locations in 2024. Our passengers will notice little or nothing of most of the modernisation work. This is because, where possible, we work during non-operating times or plan the work in such a way that it does not affect ongoing operations. Only a quarter of the measures have a noticeable impact on public transport operations.

Some of the extensive modernisation measures, such as large-scale track replacements, substructure renewals or tunnel girder renovations, are only possible when operations are interrupted. For reasons of efficiency and economy, it is necessary to divide, reroute or short-circuit lines. The complete cancellation of a line is the absolute exception.

Construction planning: close coordination with the City of Vienna

Wiener Linien works closely with the departments of the City of Vienna in construction planning. This means that necessary earthworks such as sewer renovation or district heating connections can be carried out at the same time as track construction work. Where possible, Wiener Linien's construction work is also combined with a redesign of the surface or vice versa. Examples of this are the modernisation work on the tunnel ceiling in PraterstraĂźe and the renewal of the tracks in Wiedner HauptstraĂźe. This significantly increases the added value of the modernisation measures.
