Public transport is the preferred way to move around Vienna!

Wiener Linien is committed to providing the best possible service, and to thereby steadily increasing the public transport share of city traffic. The Viennese appreciate this effort: On average, some 2.4 million passengers per day use the Wiener Linien network. Around 1.3 million people are regular customers and have an annual pass or another permanent public transport ticket - that's more than ever before.

Every day, 2.4 million passengers travel on our buses, trams and underground trains.

In 2024, 873 million passengers travelled on public transport. This represents an increase of almost 7% as compared to 2023. (Note: Following a system error, the figures for 2023 have been recalculated and updated to 817 million passengers.)

1.3 million people are regular public transport customers.

More and more people are remaining loyal to public transport as regular customers, while fewer and fewer own a car. In 2024, 1.3 million people had an annual pass or other permanent ticket from Wiener Linien, but only 736,000 still owned their own car. This means that a trend that has been in place since 2015 remains unchallenged: There are more regular public transport customers in Vienna than registered cars.

The Viennese use public transport for 34% of their journeys.

This corresponds to a third and therefore significantly more than the 25% or a quarter of journeys made by car in Vienna.

Around 9,700 people from around 60 nations work at Wiener Linien.

Around half of our employees work as bus, tram or underground drivers. In 2024, Wiener Linien trained 337 tram drivers, 105 underground train drivers and 199 bus drivers. There are also many other professions at Wiener Linien - in total, you can work in over 100 job profiles with us. We also offer an excellent apprenticeship programme; in 2024, Wiener Linien trained over 300 apprentices in promising professional fields.

We drive around the world five times a day.

In 2023, our vehicles travelled a total of around 77 million kilometres. Our buses, trams and underground trains travel 211,000 kilometres per day - that's five times the circumference of the earth. Our buses cover the most kilometres (approx. 50%), followed by trams (approx. 30%) and underground trains (approx. 20%).

Vienna has the sixth largest tram network in the world.

Wiener Linien operates the largest regional transport network in Austria. It comprises around 83 kilometres of underground lines and 880 kilometres of bus routes. With an operating length of 171 kilometres, the tram network is the sixth largest in the world. The infrastructure of Wiener Linien includes not only tracks and tunnels, but also 109 underground stations, three bus garages, ten tram depots, three underground service stations and the main workshop in Simmering.

At peak times, around 1,000 vehicles are travelling with our passengers at the same time.

Our passengers have around 500 trams, over 450 buses and over 160 underground trains at their disposal. In total, they can accommodate more than 260,000 people at any one time - that's almost as many as the population of Austria's second-largest city, Graz.

One underground train can accommodate around 900 people.

To transport the same number of people, 790 cars would be needed (average number of passengers in a car: 1.14 people).

80 per cent of public transport passengers already travel electrically and are therefore environmentally friendly,

as our underground trains, trams and e-buses are powered by electricity from renewable sources. Travelling by public transport instead of by car saves the environment 1,500 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

Public transport accounts for 1 per cent of Vienna's ecological footprint.

This is despite the fact that around 30 per cent of people in Vienna travel by public transport. The key reason for this is the high efficiency of public transport.

We obtain 100 per cent of the electricity for our vehicles from renewable energy sources.

With our globally unique charging system, we operate two bus lines completely electrically and emission-free.

We are climate protectors: The U2xU5 public transport expansion will neutralise 75,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.

This corresponds to the climate effect of a 30-year-old forest with six million trees.

300 million additional passengers will be able to travel by public transport each year thanks to the U2xU5 public transport expansion.

This corresponds to a total of 1.3 billion passengers per year - almost as many as the population of India.

Accessibility is a top priority for us.

All of our 109 underground stations and almost all tram and bus stops are barrier-free. We operate 288 lifts and 344 escalators across the entire network. Our bus fleet consists of over 400 barrier-free low-floor vehicles. At 215 millimetres, the boarding height of our most modern tram, the Flexity, is one of the lowest in the world.
