Line 12: the new tram for the 2nd district

The new tram line 12 will connect four districts of Vienna (8th, 9th, 20th, 2nd) and will offer around 250,000 residents even more mobility in future.

Better public transport connections for 250,000 residents

Starting probably in autumn 2025, tram line 12 will run from the U6 station Josefstädter Straße via Franz Josefs Bahnhof to the U4 station Friedensbrücke, continuing via Dresdner Straße and the Nordbahnviertel to the U1 station Vorgartenstraße and ending at Hillerstraße.

Passengers can change to four underground lines

The new line 12 will run through the western, northern and eastern parts of Vienna's city centre and will make it easier to reach workplaces, schools and shopping facilities by public transport. In future, passengers will be able to transfer from the tram to four underground lines: U1, U4, U6 and, in future, the U5 at Arne-Karlsson-Park.

More transfer options, shorter travel times

The new line 12 not only offers more transfer options, it also shortens journey times. The journey time from Traisengasse S-Bahn station to the U4 station FriedensbrĂĽcke will be more than halved from 13 minutes to seven minutes. In future, public transport users will be able to travel from the Nordbahnhof district to the Donauzentrum in just eleven minutes instead of 18.

Line 12 opens up Nordbahnhof and the new Nordwestbahnhof district

The majority of the flats on the Nordbahnhof site are located in the vicinity of VorgartenstraĂźe. In future, these will be even better connected to Vienna's public transport network thanks to two new tram stops. Residents will be able to get directly to the U1, U6, S-Bahn or other tram lines. The same applies to the Nordwestbahnhof urban development area: a new neighbourhood for 16,000 people will be built here on 44 hectares by 2035. Line 12 will also connect this neighbourhood in the future.

Climate-friendly: 230 metres of green track, new trees for shade and cooling

Wiener Linien is also providing greenery with the new tram line: a green track around 230 metres long is being created in the section between HaussteinstraĂźe and WalcherstraĂźe. We are also planting new trees along the new line, which will provide more greenery, shade and cooling in future.

Five new stops on 2.2 kilometers of new track

Starting at the TaborstraĂźe junction, Wiener Linien is building a 2.2-kilometre stretch of track with a total of five stops. The rest of line 12 will be covered by the existing network of lines 2 and 33. In future, the new streetcar line 12 will run from the U6 Josefstädter StraĂźe via the existing route of lines 33 and 2 to TaborstraĂźe and from there via a new 2.2-kilometre route to the terminus at Hillerstrasse in the Stuwerviertel district. Five of a total of 24 stops on the 12er will be newly built.

The new route between Nordbahnstrasse and Hillerstrasse:

  • The new route branches off from the existing tracks of Line 2 at the Rebhanngasse stop. The NordbahnstraĂźe/TaborstraĂźe junction is being adapted accordingly and is to be made more attractive as a link between the two new districts of Nordbahnhof and Nordwestbahnhof, especially for pedestrians. The stops at Rebhanngasse will be widened and modernized.
  • The next stop in the Bruno-Marek-Allee area is located in the heart of the Nordbahn district at the Christine Nöstlinger educational campus and offers a transfer option to the O line.
  • The HaussteinstraĂźe stop (near Rudolf-Bednar-Park) in VorgartenstraĂźe provides the neighborhood near Rudolf-Bednar-Park with significantly improved public transport connections. In addition, the Pensionsversicherungsanstalt (pension insurance institution) in EngerthstraĂźe is just a short walk away.
  • A link to the U1 subway line will be created at the VorgartenstraĂźe stop. This will provide new connections for journeys from the 22nd to the 20th district, for example. The stops will each be widened to over 5 meters to make it easier to change trains.
  • In addition to the existing bus line 11A, the JungstraĂźe stop in the Stuwerviertel district will also be connected to the streetcar network.
  • The terminus of line 12 will be in HillerstraĂźe.

The construction phases:

  • The construction work starts with track construction and roadworks in the TaborstraĂźe area.
  • In VorgartenstraĂźe, track and road construction will take place in the areas of Rabensburger StraĂźe/WalcherstraĂźe and Ennsgasse/HillerstraĂźe (from September 2024), WalcherstraĂźe/Ennsgasse (from January 2025) and HillerstraĂźe/EngerthstraĂźe/JungstraĂźe (from February 2025).
  • Completion is planned for fall 2025.

Traffic restrictions

🚧 September 2, 2024 to January 7, 2025: NordbahnstraĂźe will be one-way from Am Tabor to and in the direction of TaborstraĂźe. The detour will be from Dresdner StraĂźe via HellwagstraĂźe, NordwestbahnstraĂźe and Am Tabor or via InnstraĂźe, Handelskai and LassallestraĂźe.

🚧 Further road construction work along line 12 will be carried out together with the City of Vienna. There will be sectional closures along the entire route.
