We modernise lifts and escalators - new functions bring even greater accessibility

The modernisation of our infrastructure continues: in 2025, Wiener Linien will modernise eleven lifts and twelve escalators across the entire public transport network. Their new functions will ensure even greater accessibility. Wiener Linien is investing around 6.3 million euros in the modernisation.

More accessibility and modern technology for our lifts

In 2025, Wiener Linien will bring eleven lifts in the Vienna underground network up to the latest state of the art. The new lifts fulfil important accessibility standards, such as acoustic voice announcements for blind people and displays for deaf people.

This year, the focus of the lift modernisation is also on the U6: the stations Gumpendorfer Straße, Michelbeuern-AKH, Perfektastraße, Siebenhirten, Tscherttegasse and Am Schöpfwerk are getting new lifts. The Stephansplatz (U1, U3) and Hütteldorf (U4) stations will also receive new, modern lifts.

The work will take an average of eight weeks per lift.

Gumpendorfer Straße:

  • Direction Siebenhirten: 7 January to 2 March 2025

Tscherttegasse:

  • Direction Floridsdorf: 12 May to 28 November 2025 During the modernisation of the station and the improvement of accessibility, trains will only stop at Tscherttegasse station in the direction of travel Siebenhirten.

Am Schöpfwerk:

  • Direction Siebenhirten: 17 March to 11 May 2025
  • Direction Floridsdorf: 1 December 2025 to 1 February 2026

Perfektastraße:

  • Direction Siebenhirten: 13 October to 8 December
  • Direction Floridsdorf: 18 August to 12 October 2025

The lift leading from the underground station to the surface at Stephansplatz is 34 years old and has reached the end of its service life after more than ten million journeys. It now needs to be replaced so that we can guarantee barrier-free access to Stephansplatz underground station for decades to come. Among other things, the new lift will have a modern drive system, a new cabin and lift doors with concealed door rails that cannot be damaged by grit. This is particularly important in winter to prevent door malfunctions.

Restriction from 20 January to 17 March 2025: no barrier-free exit to the surface or access from the surface to the station

Changing between the underground lines U1 and U3 is still possible without barriers.

Alternatives during the modernisation:

You can reach the city centre with the tram lines on the Ring, with the underground lines U1 (stations Schwedenplatz, Karlsplatz), U2 (Karlsplatz, Schottenring), U3 (Stubentor, Herrengasse), U4 (Schwedenplatz, Schottenring) and with bus lines 1A, 2A and 3A.

The lift at Hütteldorf station is 30 years old and has completed over 6.5 million journeys. The system on the U4 platform will therefore be replaced from 26 May to 1 September by a new system that can carry significantly more passengers.

Restriction from 26 May to 1 September 2025: no barrier-free access/exit

During the conversion work, there will be no barrier-free exit from the U4 or access to the U4 in Hütteldorf.

Hütteldorf station is still accessible by tram and S-Bahn.

Twelve new, modern escalators: more safety, less energy consumption

Wiener Linien is also investing in the modernisation of its escalators. We have already refurbished or replaced 86 escalators since 2020. In 2025, we will modernise a further twelve systems, including in the Karlsplatz, Jägerstraße, Dresdner Straße and Handelskai stations.

The new escalators are characterised by lower energy consumption and better lighting, which means greater safety for our passengers.
