U2xU5 Rathaus

New public transport hub: new connections, shorter journey times

The former Rathaus U2 station will become the new U2xU5 public transport hub. In future, your journey from the U2xU5 Rathaus station to Neubaugasse will only take around two minutes, and around five minutes to the future U5xU6 Michelbeuern-AKH station.

The new station is being built between Josefstädter Straße and Universitätsstraße and will link the tunnels and stations of the U2 and U5 lines. To do this, we are digging a new underground tunnel 25 metres below the existing U2 line. The main building of the new station is being built at Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz. From here, several lifts will take you directly to the U2 and U5 platforms.

Milestones:

  • 2022: The underground outer walls of the station are completed.
  • 2023: The Alser StraĂźe/UniversitätsstraĂźe junction is restored. From 2023, most of the construction work takes place underground.
  • 2026: The U5 goes into operation.
  • 2030: The U2 extension to Matzleinsdorfer Platz goes into operation.

In the second expansion phase, the U5 will be extended to Hernals via the Arne-Karlsson-Park and AKH stations. It will then be possible to quickly change to all underground lines in Vienna via the U5.

Experience Vienna's underground future now!

The U2xU5 information centre is an interactive exhibition in the Volkstheater U3 station. Various stations provide in-depth insights into underground railway construction. However, the exhibition is not just for looking at, but for touching and trying out for yourself. Why not try your hand at controlling the tunnelling machine and dig your way through Vienna's underground!
